I miss Halloween. I really enjoyed taking the girls trick or treating and dressing up to distribute candy.

Alas, in Switzerland Halloween is not much of a thing. In the “expat bubble” communities (that is, those Zurich suburbs where you can’t swing a black cat without hitting an English speaker) there is usually Trick Or Treating going on, but for the most part in Switzerland October 31 is just another fall day. Still, you’ll find private Halloween parties and all that, but the general populace won’t be turning their front lawn into a scary cemetery, nor decorating with Jack o’lanterns.

So these days I get my Halloween kicks from Pinterest.

An amazing Halloween party by Loralee Lewis. Check out the hunted mansion cutouts!
(Also take a peek at her Wicked Witches Tea Party)

Tombstone Cookies and Dark Chocolate Graveyard Pots de Crème, from Sunset magazine.

Some scarily awesome cupcakes from a Brit expat in Germany (shared here)

Genius! A can of black spray paint and some glitter turns a “Christmas village”
into a spooky village.
(36th Avenue)

Some BOO-tiful cookies from Sweetopia. Who knew spiderwebs could look delicious?

If you want something simpler, dig out your gingerbread man cookie cutter and make these mummy cookies.

And for some easy decorating, here are some free printables to give your windows, wallscandy jars and party drinks a spooky makeover.

Happy Halloween!

I love the way our living room is setup now. What was once a too-large, half-empty room is now homey, comfortable and  feels just right. With one exception: the lonely wall behind the sofa. That empty space is where I have been wanting to build a gallery wall. I have been gathering some art, posters and pictures and now I might have almost enough… but I still find the task daunting: how to place the pictures? Mix colors or keep a simple palette? How big and how small can I go with the individual pieces on the wall?

Which is when I went in search of some Pinspiration:

Aren’t they just lovely?

I love the look of black and white photos, but I don’t want to go completely monochrome. I think I want to add some pops of color, and definitely different types of textures. Because the rest of the room isn’t really ornate or busy, I want this wall to have a lot going on . Here are a few pictures I am considering:

The NYC skyline and the Audrey Hepburn posters I got at Target before we moved back to Zurich. The purple flower is from IKEA, I just thought it was so pretty! The painting with the ombre sky and the Chrysler Building is by one of my favorite artists, Carl Röhrig. And the one with the arches is a canvas print of a picture I took two years ago in Barcelona. Here’s a close-up:

It’s kind of cool, isn’t it? This will be the first time I hang a picture I took myself. I have been thinking for a while of getting canvas prints of some of my favorite pictures, and finally I took the plunge!

Now here’s where it gets interesting for you:
the lovely people at Photo Canvas, who generously allowed me to play around with their software until I found a combination I liked (such patience! but hey, a girl likes to check out her options, right?), well… they want to give you a free canvas print as well!

That means you can choose your favorite photo, like a gorgeous scenery you enjoyed while on vacation, or that adorable picture of your kids that you shot last Christmas, or maybe that photo where you are cozing up to your favorite celeb (Tim Gunn, anyone?)… and get it printed and mounted on a lovely canvas-and-wood frame, and hang it right there in your home office, or your living room… easy bragging, no word spoken ;-)

Getting your print coulnd’t be easier: you go to photo-canvas.com, choose your preferred size, upload your picture, and you get a preview of what your fabulous print will look like.
The software is designed in such a way that you will get an alert if the image definition isn’t good enough for the size you picked, so you can just go ahead and experiment until you land on the combination you think would be just perfect.

Photo-Canvas ships everywhere in the world, so this giveaway is open internationally!

How a baby shower will wreck your nerves and then boost your self-esteem, all in one pretty package.

June 13, 2012 decorating

If you have hung-out with me in the past few months, you know that despite being super-busy, especially while my husband was away for several weeks, I was obsessed with one thing: hosting my very first baby shower. I am a very nervous hostess. When a celebration of some kind is approaching and I’m hosting [...]

When a picture says it all…

June 18, 2010 cool blogs

Among the many blogs I read, there are quite a few interior decorating blogs. And the one I find myself popping by most often is without a doubt From The Right Bank. I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Ally when she came to Zurich with her husband recently, and I was [...]
