In the mood for… yoga

in the mood for... yoga

Poster • tank top • necklace • DVD • sports bra • yoga pants • yoga blocks • yoga mat • nail polish

I love sunny Sunday mornings. I love waking up early, before anyone else is up, and go out to the backyard and do a few Sun Salutations without having to worry about my neighbor looking at me funny. I love being able to take in fresh morning air with those big breaths I time my poses with. I love being able to smell the flowers in my garden and hear the birds, it somehow makes me feel like… like it’s all coming together.

When I do yoga I don’t feel like a fat girl, I don’t berate myself for not being able to do more reps or jump higher. Through the years, fitness fads and exercise have gone in and out of my to-do list, but I never get tired of yoga. Even if it’s a few poses, just a few minutes… it always helps. I think it’s because unlike other kinds of exercise, it makes me conscious of my body without making me self-conscious about it. Instead, when I do yoga I feel lucky, and strong, and positive.

The other cool thing about yoga: you need very little. You can practice in pretty much any comfortable clothing, but I have my basics: a soft tank (I like the Organic Cotton lacy tanks from H&M), a pair of yoga pants (after much experimenting, I found that I seem to like the ones by Old Navy better than their more expensive and fancier counterparts) and a soft but supportive sports bra to keep the “girls” in check.

I also like having a sticky mat, so I don’t slip when in downward dog, which is one of my favorite poses but can get really annoying when your hands keep slipping.

And for those days when it’s rainy out and I have to take my yoga indoors, nothing beats the lovely Sara Ivanhoe. She is my favorite yoga instructor – I had the pleasure of meeting her in person a few years ago, and she is as lovely, warm and down-to-earth as she seems. I have been an even bigger fan since!

As for the nail polish, it is by no means an essential – but I love looking down at my toes and seeing my nails painted in a pretty color. And the Satya necklace… that’s not just “for prettyness” as they say here. It’s for inspiration, as well. But it sure doesn’t hurt that it’s that pretty!

How about you? Do you practice yoga? What’s you favorite thing to do to unwind and carve out some “me time”?

Oooh that mat looks fantastic! I don’t practice yoga but pilates and I love it for the same reasons. I have to sit in front of the computer all day long and it really, really helps :)

Years ago, when living in Southern California, I used to do yoga on the beach. I stopped after awhile because sand in your crotch kinda sucks.

Was I doing yoga wrong?

Ya know, I haven’t done yoga in AGES. I used to love it. The kids and I used to do it together as well. I remember it being really fun! Thanks for reminding me. I’ll have to get a new yoga dvd for the family and one just for me. That gear looks lovely as well!

I love yoga as well and haven’t been doing it at all lately. :( I will get back into the groove this fall!

The sticky mat is essential. Maybe I’d do more yoga if I had a cute one like that one!

You have me wanting to run home and do some yoga asap! I started doing yoga a few years ago but I am still in the ‘beginners phase’. I’m very impatient and find it hard to relax so I am still trying to get the hang of it!

Talk about a stylish workout! I absolutely love the colors in this set. I seriously think that yoga would appeal to me much more if that mat were in my life!! :)

Love that purple yoga mat. I used to do pilates for “me” time but the classes got too expensive. Now I head to the gym 4 mornings a week at about 6:15. I wouldn’t change it for a thing.

Hi Elisa!
haven’t been commenting in a while. Life was a bit crazy lately.
I practiced yoga during my second pregnancy and now I started doing some. I do enjoy it, and so does my son (who practices yoga in pre-school). Good hints about what to wear: the set is really nice :)
