The making of a road trip

in ramblings,travel

I have been a bit distracted lately.

For the past several months, I have been suffering from travel fever. The need to get away has been getting stronger and stronger, to the point that the prospect of a trip, any trip, has been on my mind more than anything else and more tempting than a Jimmy Choo shopping spree.

So now that a trip is finally approaching – and not just any trip, but one I would be looking forward to even if I wasn’t this travel-deprived – I have been pouring over travel books, and planning itineraries… basically being a full-immersion Spain-obsessed traveling control freak. It’s not pretty, people.

Some people totally don’t get me when I’m like this. When I share bits of my travel fever they make a face and say “But I thought you were happy in Switzerland, now” (subtext: finally, you whiny, pathetic, spoiled thing.) But it has nothing to do with being unhappy – or rather, it doesn’t necessarily.

It’s the need for change.

No matter how good things are, how happy I am, I never find myself wishing “I hope things were always like this.” (Sure, there are some things I woulnd’t mind being constants. Like Stella sleeping through the night. Or having no breakouts.)

I know so many people who are upset or overwhelmed by change. I seem to kind of thrive on it. It keeps things interesting!

But I don’t think that is so uncommon – think of how many people change jobs all the time. Or how many redecorate constantly. Or how many cannot commit – no wait, that’s inexcusable. Although, isn’t committing to a place much the same as committing to a person? Maybe I haven’t found my geographic soul mate?

But I digress. That’s a rant for another time.

I have been planning our summer vacation. We are going to Spain – do you know how long I’ve wanted to go to Spain? Forever. The fact that we are driving there would be a deterrent, except  we are stopping in Barcelona on our way to the Costa Blanca. Barcelona! One of the top places in my travel bucket list.

I don’t like to overplan my trips. But I do like some semblance of structure, mostly because there are usually thing I want to see before I leave. For the rest, I pretty much like walking around almost aimlessly, which is really fun because you feel less like a tourist and more like an explorer ;-)

But when I started reading this Guide to Barcelona and this Spain Travel Guide I saw just how much there is to see, especially in Barcelona, which is really just a long layover for us on the way to our actual destination.

And that’s when I started obsessing. Kinda. A little bit. ’cause I just had to figure out how to see as much as possible without over-scheduling – which is when a vacation starts feeling like work, so you want to steer clear of that.

So far, this is the plan for our road-trip vacation:

Day 1: Drive from Zurich to Barcelona

Day 2: visit Barcelona.

Day 3: spend morning in Barcelona, leave after lunch for Benidorm, on the Costa Blanca.

Day 4-13: visit Valencia, Benidorm, Alicante, Gandìa (a must for someone for anyone interested in the history surrounding the Borgia family), and spend the rest of the time walking on the beach, swimming in the Mediterranean, eating paella and pescados y mariscos. And I bet I’ll have my share of sangría and Alsace Riesling, too.

Day 14: Leave the Costa Blanca to start the trip back home; stop over in Montpellier, France, for the night. Walk around, visit the city.

Day 15: Leave Montpellier, drive to Lake Geneva and spend some time around Morges before driving to Zurich; maybe stop in Berne to walk around the old town and have coffee with my best friend M.

Damn, it does sound a little more like work than a vacation at times. But boy, wouldn’t that be great? To get paid for traveling and seeing gorgeous places? Sign me up!

What are your plans for this summer?

I am so jealous!!! My plans for the rest of summer are just to try to get some things done around the house. We just came back from a conference in Atlanta, Georgia. We are hoping to go somewhere in late fall – but we will see. Hope you have a wonderful trip@

What a terrific post!!! Honestly, we are just hanging around. We are going to PA to visit family for awhile in the RV. In the fall, perhaps Tennessee to visit my sister. Nothing exotic like last year….I miss it!! Terribly! I would love to travel like you do!! Have a BLAST! I know you will and I cannot wait to hear all about it!!

Oh. I cannot begin to express how envy has taken over my body just this second. Barcelona is my travel bucket list! ;)

I have been to Madrid, Seville and Toledo, and each was more beautiful than the next, but Barcelona is a must see for me. Take loads of pics, please.

Barcelona is fantastic, we spent 8 days there… and still didn’t see all that we wanted to.

My husband would have a fit if he had to drive all around, ..(I don’t drive) .. doesn’t mind baseing ourselves somewhere and then driving, like we did in Lake como or Liguria or Sicily.

Barcelona was great as walked or metro every where :-)

That sounds fantastic!!! I”m glad you’re finally getting your trip fix. I, as you know, am going “home” to NYC for a few days, then the whole Lane gang is meeting at a lake in Virginia for a week of fishing, boating and the like. Then it’s back to the grind as school starts.

Oh, I so get your need for travel. My sister is in Barcelona RIGHT NoW and I wish I was there, too. I however am too fat and too likely to give birth, so our next trip will probably be in February. I probably couldn’t handle the heat right now anyway. But the SOuth of Spain is on my list as one of our next destination. Have never made it past the North yet.

Have a great holiday!

That sounds positively amazing! My only real “getaway” this summer is weekends on the Cape… it’s a staycation, I guess!

What a wonderful sounding trip! I absolutely love road trips and I can only imagine how awesome one across Europe and Spain would be!

Hmmm… Now you’ve got me wanting to plan a road trip for the summer. The only problem is, Japan is so small I’ve already been almost everywhere – literally! *sigh* :P

Your trip to Spain sounds wonderful. I can see why you are anxious to travel and to be visiting a place you’ve always wanting – cross it off the list – you’ve accomplished it (almost) lady. =) (By the way, thank you so much for including my blog on your list of favorite spots -thrilled!)

More than Jimmy Choo? Those are some serious words!

And wow, a two week vacation through Spain. That sounds AMAZING. I hope you have a fantastic time.

I am working my bum off to pay down debt and save money right now, so my summer will be exceptionally low key. Especially since it is about 115 degrees here, I’ll be spending most of my days indoors. :)

I don’t blame you. THose pictures alone are enough to get you excited. We hope to go to Wisconsin before the kids go back to school. Our oldest has been traveling all summer for Basketball so, that has really thrown our schedule off.

I have what I call wanderlust. My parents are to partially blame for this. They believed that travel was the best form of education. So as far back as I can remember, I have had a vacation every three months, irrespective of school.
Now if I have to stay put for more than 6 months I start getting itchy feet. The last year has been horrible and it looks like it’s going to be the same for some time. The techie and I have started a capital and labour intensive business and it’s one year since we have left the city.
I guess what I am trying to say is, I get how you feel. So go enjoy your holiday while I turn green with envy.
Please share some lovely pictures to make me feel better.

Can I come with you? Your trip sound perfect, I would love to just copy your entire itinerary! I desperately want to go to Spain, France, and Italy… some time in my life! But for now, the BF and I are hoping to just get back down to NYC in the fall! And maybe the Adirondacks this summer? Ah, it all sounds so lame in comparison to a European road trip!
