Stamp of Approval: the trench – classic with a twist.

in fashion,Things I like

When I was about 11 years old, my godmother gave me an Armani trench coat. I wasn’t super-excited about it, because hello!? it was the late 80s and anything in the beige color family wasn’t really in a tween’s/teen’s fashion vocabulary. But I wore it, because it went with everything, and while nobody in my school had one, John Cusack did, and that was good enough for me ;-)

90′s fashion was a mishmash of styles and bits and pieces from various decades – it was a lot of fun! Dandy (which is in again!) ruffled blouses, to preppy-schoolgirl tartan minis, 70′s inspired details… it was never boring, always changing, and there was so much space to be creative with such a mix of different trends. Trench coats, on the other hand, in my mind fell in with the “classic” way of dressing, with suits and sensible pumps, and button-down white shirts. It made me yawn just thinking about it.

Fast forward to the past few years, living in Switzerland, where it rains a lot, then in New York, where layering becomes an art, especially in Spring and Fall, and then back to Switzerland, where it still rains a lot, dammitpretty much year-round. Le’s also consider the new classic: suits are better cut, more flattering, and more colors have entered the realm of “acceptable to wear to work”. Not to mention I have been inspired by New Yorkers wearing trench coats in all kinds of colors and over virtually everything.

And that’s when I set out to find the trench for me. It had to be affordable, it had to be flattering (no square shoulders and straight cut for this curvy gal, thanks!) and it had to have something about it. Something fun, something interesting. In other words, not a trench that said “my life is as beige as this coat”.

And now I found it. I found it, people! And I bought it. And I wore it. And I LOVE it!

The trench is made by Miss Sixty, a brand that this far had made no appearance whatsoever in my closet, mostly because until a few years ago a lot of their clothes semed to be geared towards teeny bops, and as such they came in sizes that left no space for… well, most of me. But now I have new respect for this brand, because they added XL to their repertoire, and they created what’s without a doubt my favorite coat in several years.

The trench has a flared skirt, which is not only more flattering and more feminine, but definitely more fun! Its lines don’t call to mind the word stiff and serious, do they?

But also, my friends, the trench has studs. Studs, people! How could I not love it?

The trench is available in XS-XL, and it comes in black, khaki and ivory. I chose khaki because it seemed to me like the best year-round neutral, but I do love the black one for late fall and warmer winter days. The trench retails for $225, except on Bluefly, where it’s sold for $135 (and guess where I got mine? ;-) ).  You can also find it on Amazon.com (black and khaki, XS-L), on Overstock.com (black in S-L, khaki in L only) and on SmartBargains (khaki, L only) for less than half the retail price!!

SO, what do you think? Are you a fan of trench coats? Why or why not? Do you have one? What do you wear it with?

oh great stuff, love the coat! Never buy one from Zara, all my buttons fell of that one :( I must say, I quite like Miss Sixty, I’ve only got one pair of jeans but I’ve had them for 7 years now! ok, they were far to big for me at that time, and they are supersuper small now…but hey…the quality must be good when they last 7 years?

I LOVE this coat! I’ll bet you look fab in it. Excellent buy! Some trenches can look a bit boring but this one most certainly doesn’t! It’s got a Miss Sixty flair to it. Gorge! I hear you on the rain front sista! It’s rains a heck of a lot here too :-( more than in Zurich!

Gorgeous. I have a hard time with trenches (or any coat really) because I am 1-2 sizes bigger on top then bottom (thanks to a big chest- you might think it would be fun, but it’s not). I usually buy big and then have it tailored- so really I hate shopping for coats.

Love the studs on the trench – gives a bit of a rock chic element, which I appreciate.
There is more to it than the classical trench, which I also like. It looks good on you and I think the studs also adds a bit of “Edge” – I like that!:-)

I don’t know much, but I do know that khaki doesn’t look very good on me. So my trench is kelly green. I don’t even know if the cut is good on me, but the color is. Atlanta doesn’t have many days when that weight of jacket is needed, but I love it when I can wear it.

This is great! Love the shape and details. I have a Versace trench from early in the 2000s…it’s kind of discolored in one spot but I still wear it!

What an amazing trench! I love the flared skirt and studs, such a unique twist on the classic. I have the classic Burberry black trench that I love, but this coat has a nice flair to it….so cute!!!

I’ve never bothered to buy a tan trench because I’ve yet to see one with some edge… but girl… you found it! What an amazing pick. It’s classic but different!

Ohhh, that really is quite cute. I have respected the classic utility of a trench, and the various colors (and sometimes prints) these days have certainly made them more fun, but this is the best of both worlds. Still classic and versatile, while TOTALLY being different and cute. Nice job hunting! :)

I love a trench – I recently bought myself my very first Burberry one and I’ve worn it constantly. Did you keep the Armani one your aunt gave you? x

I have always loved the audrey-hepburn-ness of a classic trench coat. I bought my first one from Kenneth Cole to celebrate getting my first job after college, and I still love wearing it. I love to pair it with leggings and ballet flats!

If the trench is good enough for Lloyd Dobbler, it’s good enough for me!

I have a black trench that is my fall/winter go-to coat. It is just fitted enough that it looks girlie. I love it. I’ve been looking for a light, short tan trench for cool spring and summer days and nights, but just haven’t found the right one yet.
