Preparing for summer… though baby, it’s cold outside

by Elisa on March 11, 2010

in fashion,summer

So what if it’s cold? So what if it snowed and it’s icy out and you have to be bundled up and wearing your flat winter boots, that you loved but are quite frankly getting sick of at this point?

In spite of the cold, or maybe because of it, I decided to turn my attention to spring and summer. Some may prepare for summer by exercising obsessively, other by dieting (have you ever tried eating only salads when it’s freezing out? yeah, good luck with that)… I prefer to get ready by looking at fabulous clothes and deciding which ones I might be able to fit into my budget and which ones I’ll have to just settle for a pale (but still fabulous!) imitation of.

Let’s start the inspiration parade with my faves from the latest additions to the Kate Spade S/S 2010 collection:

Reina polka dot dress worn with red Bet sandals, Addie tweed jacket, sheer striped anklet in Cherry Sorbet with black and white t-strap peep-toes

and continue with those from the amazing Diane Von Fustenberg collection – I’m usually not big on prints, especially florals, but there is something almost mesmerizing and yet gracious and elegant about these pieces:

Cipolla Silk Blouson, Zora Draped Silk Dress, Greo Jersey Wrap Dress, Swann Silk Bubble Dress

and the cool graphics prints and brightly-colored basic shapes at BCBGMaxAzria:

asymmetrical-hem printed silk dress, strapless printed chiffon dress, slit-sleeve silk dress in Ultra Violet and Emerald, one-shoulder fitted dress in Larkspur Blue and Begonia

and the effortless day-to-night sequins and metallics at Tory Burch:

twill skirt with sequins, Alton top, Alton blazer, Rennon dress

Designer clothing may be expensive, but looking doesn’t cost a penny. And if they are out of our budget, we can still use them as inspiration. Doesn’t beauty make you feel more creative? Then it’s up to you to decide how to use the creative energy.

I want that Kate Spade polka dot dress.

In my next life I’m coming back as a Kate Spade bag.

It already is. And you know, I used to hate hate hate socks with pumps, but I guess it can be done right. The effect has to be playful and look like you are not trying too hard. For instance, pairing candy-colored anklets with somewhat conservative spectator pumps adds a “grown up school girl” vibe to the outfit that can be really charming I think.

Not everyone can pull it off though. I personally haven’t tried it on yet.

not a fan of the little-girl ankle socks but the rest is fabulous!

My issue with the anklets is that it seems too “school girl” which then makes me wonder about what man is attracted to that look… a man who is attracted to SCHOOL GIRLS? As in a pedophile?

Other than that, I cannot WAIT for spring and summer!

If I had the money, I’d wear DVF dresses every single day…

Hi Elisa (..ur my tocalla…means you have the same name as me)..

I agree who wants salad when its cold out and all you want is a bowl of hot soup or something “comforting”. I’m also looking for spring/summer collection to distract me from this cold and gray weather and your post is perfect. I like several of the dresses, I’m sure I can find something similar but more on my budget.

I totally buy Vogue every month and my husband is always like- “did you win the lotto cause that is the only way we could afford any of thos clothes” and I always tell him I look at it for inspiration, which I totally can and do. Mostly because until that nigerian prince gets back to me with my cash I cannot afford $500 shirts, but also because no one can actually dress like that and walk around, and work and play peek a boo- but I always find something I can duplicate with stuff from Old Navy, so it totally works.

Ah yes, it’s diet time again!

Although here in San Francisco the summers are so cold I can barely break out the short sleeves. I think I need to move to a warmer climate. That will force me to really go on a diet and try on something skimpier than a turtleneck in July!

I’m not sure how I feel about the socks with heels, I’m sure it depends on the outfit. Do you think there’s an age limit with that look, though?

After waking up to snow this morning, I am really ready for summer. The Kate Spade polka dot dress seems so Betty Draper to me…I love it!

Elisa, I concur! Toss the salad out the window and hunt for some spring fashions! I love the tweed jacket. I don’t know why I’m so hooked on tweed this spring! But in all honesty if I don’t eat my salads I won’t be able to fit the tweed jacket I got from Lane Bryant…LOL! So I’ll be on the treadmill in about 5 hours and yes it is 2:12 a.m. in NYC. :-(

I’m with you – I have most certainly had it with winter! I can feel the spring in the air but we’re not there yet and I’m dying to wear my spring coats, especially my new ones (I treated myself to a Luella tweed jacket when she went out of business that I haven’t yet worn). That Kate Spade jacket is right up my alley!
