Those of you who have been reading my blog from the very beginning know that I used to do event alerts. I more or less stopped doing that after we moved, because what fun is doing event alerts when I cannot attend the events? But it’s almost April, people. That means that Switzerland is starting to wake up and the Zurich event calendar will start filling up soon.
But the good thing about being in Switzerland is that you are smack-dab in the middle of Europe, so you can be in France, Germany, Austria, Italy in just a few hours (and Czech Republic in just over 6). A few years ago we drove to Milan for the Madonna concert (the Drowned World Tour, which was awesome. Ah, remember when Madonna still had it? Before the plastic surgery and general skankiness and cougar-like behavior? Good times.) and while I don’t plan on going on endless road trips with two kids in tow to attend every single event, I’m a girl. I like to have choices. A wide selection, if you will. Which is when I decided to start doing a monthly Event Alert post, extending the definition of “local” events beyond the Swiss borders.
So, because I like symmetry and simplicity (translate: I’m lazy and and wanted to make it easy) I traced a circle around Zurich, with its edges reaching Milan in the South and Geneva in the West. Then I widened it a bit to include Munich (which horrified my husband, who now believes I will be dragging him around Switzerland and Northern Italy and Southern Germany and we’ll start living like gypsies and go completely bankrupt. Pfft. Wimp. Just kidding honey, love you, you’re the best!), but thought better of it. Because I’m European after all, and long drives sound like a hell of a lot of work. So the chances that I’ll just drive to Munich at the drop of a hat are pretty slim. Unless there’s something really awesome, in which case I just might.
But I digress (as usual) so without further ado, here’s the circle:

Everything that falls within the circle is fair game. Most places can be reached in a little over 3 hours by car, though it can easily take 5 hours to go to Milan, depending on the traffic, time of the year and weather. But it might just be worth it
So there you have it. The first event alert post, for the month of April 2010, will be up in a few days. Turns out there is quite a lot to do around here.

Hi Elisa.. I have friends that live near Basel.. and they drive miles and miles.. I know they go to the Alps in France for the weekends sometimes, near Grenoble. They have been down to Lake Como, which is a must!! When we stayed with them last year , they took us to Titisee.. a beautiful place in Germany. We also went to a fabulous castle in France. All of this is on my blog. I have also been to Lake Como back in 2007 photos etc on the my blog too!
Sounds like a brilliant idea, I definitely would be doing that if I lived there.
Hi Anne!
Well, of course we drive if we are going on vacation. This summer we are going to drive to Alicante, in Spain, and stop in France on the way there and back.
But driving for hours to attend an event? That takes dedication. Or an especially desperate case of boredom
april event alert for your calendar! my fave band right now will be in zurich april 29th
(Mumford & Sons) – no driving!

I am so overdue to a trip to Europe. You don’t mind if I come visit do you? Actually, right now my daughter is visiting finland, estonia, belgium and Russia. I’m jealous. Sigh.
I think our circles just kiss but don’t overlap.

Sounds like a plan to drive the last of winter out!

Oh, that is an ENVIABLE circle!! Wonderful! I can’t wait to see what you find to do this spring/summer!
I love your plan but do feel a little sorry for the little towns that are juuuust outside your circle. I didn’t realize Milano is this close. One of the benefits to Zürich is being able to leave and travel all over Europe. I have to remind myself of this and maybe learn how to drive stick shift. I look forward to your event list!
I wish I could go to Milan and Geneva and Stuttgart and all of the other fabulous places that are within your circle. Sigh. We’re the same here, though. I have DC, Philly, NYC, the ocean, the mountains, all within three hours and we rarely go to any of them. We need to get out more.

So glad you are finding stuff to do!!
How exciting. I would probably never be able to visit these places. I am forever stuck here in the good old Midwest.
So I suppose I will just have to enjoy them thru you.
Wonderful! I hope a few events will be in the Vaud/Geneva regions. I’m looking so forward to seeing my first Swiss Spring and Summer and participating in all the festivities.

Milan! Sigh. I so wish I was where you were right now!
You’re going to be my local event planner? Awesome. Can’t wait.
