Outfit of the week, dirty laundry and a SATC reference

… because that’s how it is some days.

I had trouble naming the outfit of the week, because… well, because of the dirty laundry. The figurative kind. I thought of naming it  a generic “Conservative… but not too much” or a more honest “My ‘visiting estranged relatives’ oufit” but nothing sounded quite right. Even now, I don’t know how much I should share of the occasion the outfit was put together for.

The abridged and censored (as in”I’m not sure hubs would be ok with me sharing more”) version of the story is: I had to go visit someone I don’t hang out with, I am not close to, and I am not even positive I like very much. I normally don’t hang out with anyone I don’t really like, because I figure life is too short to spend time with people whose company doesn’t make you happy, especially if you feel you have to put on some kind of face that isn’t really you. I don’t like being in a situation where I feel I cannot be myself. But then again, I often feel that way here in Switzerland.

Gah. I degress.

Anyway, so the matter at hand: what to wear if you want to be elegant (but not over the top), somewhat conservative, but still, you know, you?

My outfit looked something like this:

coffee date with the grownups :-)

I put a lot of thought into it, because I wanted to look like me, but a tad more conservative. But not like I was trying too hard, of course. And I wanted to look like a grownup. Yes, I know I am a grownup, but when I feel like someone is likely to start patronizing me any minute, I prefer not to give them extra ammunition by dressing “too young”. So I of course wore a fabulous pair of high-heeled suede boots that are murder on heels, but look very elegant.

I risked breaking my neck because when I got out of the car the ground was icy, but I made it to the door. And once I made it there, I was welcomed and handed a pair of slippers (yellow chenille!!) to put on, instead of my fabulous pair of boots, before I entered the house. Which made me think of the time in SATC when Carrie went to the baby shower and she was told to leave her Manolos at the entrance. She pointed to her clothes and said: “But… this is an outfit“. I hear ya, Carrie.

After 2 long, somewhat awkward hours I put on my boots again, handed the yellow slippers back, said goodbye and we made our way to the car, trying not to fall on the ice and trying to figure out how to make up for the two lost hours. Oh well, at least there was cake.

LOL! I have totally been in that situation before where I’ve been asked to remove my shoes and it completely derails the outfit! I hope the slippers were at least comfy :)

Oh no. I once went to a party, a lot like the SATC one, though I don’t think the hostess was a on a germ thing but some Japanese faux Zen thing. I was wearing these short black almost-motorcycley boots that I adored. Adored. They were new, they made the OUTFIT –which was otherwise just jeans and a sweater–perfect. I didn’t really think I wanted to be at a party where I had to take them off. I had a stand-off at the door. “But I don’t want to take off my shoes.” “Please take off your shoes and line them here.” “But I need my boots.” “Please just do it like everyone else.”

So I left.

I’m sorry you probably didn’t have that option. I’m REALLY sorry about the chenille. At least your boots weren’t missing like Carrie’s.

I had a very similar problem having to dress for a house full of DOGS the other day. Also not too easy.

Love the SATC reference…. I remember that! And can still barely relate all these years later, regretfully. I would’ve looked at the slippers and heaved an internal sigh of relief that I would no longer be in danger of slipping and making a fool of myself. ;)

But I bet you looked absolutely gorgeous. And I’m glad you got some cake to make up for the time lost… that’s better than leaving with only some sarcastic comments to get some laughs at a later date.

What?

Crap. I hate spending time with people I don’t really like and I particularly hate dressing up for them. I’d rather just dress for ME, y’know?

Your outfit is dressier than mine would have been. I should probably up my standards. :)

That outfit is beautiful. And I totally remember that episode. Isn’t it odd how it almost seems like it happened to a friend of ours, and well … now it did! ;) Hope the slippers were comfy, at least!

Oh, gosh! I have freakishly small feet, so “big girl” socks never fit me correctly. The heel is usually up over the hell of my shoes, but can hide it. I once had on some one-size-too-big ankle boots, which I padded with too-big socks. They asked me to take my shoes off! So I spent the entire night with my socks flopping around. HOT.

Is that the same episode where she loses her shoes actually the hostess steals them? I still think about that episode and how single people have to fork out so much dough to support their married friends wedding gifts, baby shower gifts, etc.

Love the outfit!!
