Days of summer: the gold, the black and the ugly

In Sardinia, where I’m from, there are two summer staples: white and gold. I don’t do either.

Gold just seems to have a gaudy quality to it – especially when there’s gold sandals added to the mix. Sure, I own gold jewelry, mostly gifts from my Italian family. I’ll wear gold jewelry occasionally. But never pile it on, the way they do at home, with a gold necklace, one or two gold bracelets, a gold wedding band, and often a few more gold rings.

I prefer white gold and silver – more low-maintenance, more casual. I guess I could include platinum there, except I don’t own anything in platinum. As my friend M. once said: “I love jewelry, but I refuse to wear anything on my finger that someone may feel is worth more than the finger itself.” She was afraid of someone cutting off her finger to steal the ring, you see. Which is why her husband never had to bother getting a second mortgage on their home to get her the ring she originally wanted for their anniversary. (Just kidding. He wouldn’t have needed a second mortgage. Though that ring did cost like a small car. Or a motorbike.)

What about the other summer staple back home? White? Please. It may be the color of purity and all, but it’s much less so when there’s a big fat red wine or pasta sauce stain on it. Then it just looks extra-sloppy. Not to mention white attracts bugs, too – the same way they are attracted to light, they buzz towards white. Which seriously begs the question: why would I wear white, ever? I don’t. When you go out with kids you already have to watch out for their little sticky paws, which is how you learn the complicated manouvers required to pick up a very dirty child without getting any of the dirt/sauce/color/[fill the blank] on you. Do I ever want to become a total freak about picking up my child by wearing white? I don’t think so.

I know there are people who don’t feel the way I do. People with more grace perhaps, who know they won’t get stains on their pristine white outfit. Or maybe just people who don’t care that much if they get stains on it.

You know what else I don’t do? Skinny jeans. Oh, yes, I know they make them in my size. But in my opinion, my much-less-than-slim thighs and butt REALLY do not belong in skinny jeans, or anything that tight for that matter. I’m pretty sure that I’d feel like a sausage. Probably look like one, too.

Combine white with skinny jeans, one of the current trends, and you have something I don’t even want to be close to.

Although apparently the latest-latest-really-so-much-it-isn’t-even-in-stores trend for skinny jeans is camouflage. Camouflage? Seriously? Not for me. Don’t like it. I think it should be saved for soldiers and hunters. Not even bounty hunters should wear it, because let’s face it, black is a much better color for cargos and combat boots. You look much scarier in black.

There’s a reason for camouflage, and unless you need to, you know… camouflage, I don’t think you should wear it. Although I think I may have just gotten a genius idea. A mom camouflage. You know, where instead of green, brown and khaki etc you have a mix of ketchup-red, chocolate brown, various ice-cream colors, and a bit of off-white thrown in for nursing moms. You know how awesome that would be? Moms would flock to get it, I’m sure. So many moms complain that all their clothes have child-related stains on them… that wouldn’t be a problem anymore: the stains would be camouflaged because of the mom camo. Awesome.

Mind you, I wouldn’t wear it. It would be hideous. But very practical.

Great post! I hear ya on the white and gold. I would wear more white, but I’m a bit of a messy eater (and I have a toddler), so I would have to take out a loan to buy enough Shout to get the stains out of my clothes. My grandma taught me about the beauty of white gold early in life (I always coveted her engagement ring…it now sits atop my own wedding band!), so that’s the route I go with jewelry.

I cannot imagine my big butt covered with camo, though I would not be the only mom at the playground wearing it, if you know what I’m sayin’…

OH NO! I admit, I have gold sandals. I actually wore the yesterday with a white sundress & a gold necklace – LOL! I knew I would love Sardinia! You’re right – white is very difficult when you have to have children around. Most of my white pieces are inexpensive – for that exact reason. Great post!

Hilarious post! I refuse to wear white, gold or camo. However, I looove skinny jeans and heels. I don’t fit into my favorite pair right now (or ANY for that matter)…with pants that tight, there’s no room for gaining an extra 15 pounds.

Let me explain the love of the pants…I am relatively short, and I have a HUGE butt and thighs, with a very tiny top…And getting siad butt into a pair of skinny jeans is downright work, but once it is in and pants are zipped, I slip on a pair of sexy heels and toss my hips around like I own the world. They make me feel sexy, even being a bigger girl.

It helps I don’t give a flying crap what others think while I’m out in public, tho. ;) I’m sure I look like a complete fool…But I feel sexy!

I’m not a gold kind of girl either. But I’m ever lucky enough to go to Sardinia you can bet I’ll pile it on with a white dress so I can pretend I’m a local. Because when I’m tan – I look hot in white! ;-)

I feel the exact same way about gold. I taught my DH when we first starting dating that yellow gold is a no-no, and thankfully I have gotten all white gold since.

Love your blog, by the way!

I am so with you on the gold and skinny jeans. I just think white is not practical, so not even an option for me. Fine on others, not on me. Gold? It’s pretty rare that I see a piece of gold jewelry and don’t think it would be better in silver.
But skinny jeans? No, no, no. Not now, not ever. When I was in 8th grade, I wore these jeans. In pastel colors with bows on the ankles, no less. How ugly! I’ll a bit further than you and say that even on the tallest, shapliest woman, skinny jeans just don’t work. They look out of style, and not in a cool, retro way. Just in an out of style way. The only exception…they are easier with boots…but still too tight!

White little dresses with gold jewellery totally remind me and take me back to Greece, too… I actually like that combination if it is done right, on the right girl, who has a beautiful golden (only from the meditterean sea) tan… nice! I don’t do gold jewellery though… I love silver and white gold!

Oh, you’ve got to get a patent on that idea immediately. “Ketchup red,” “Snot yellow,” “Puked Up Gummi Bears,” it’s gonna be a goldmine. :)

I used to be staunchly anti-gold jewelery and then Sex And The City happened and Carrie wore gold chains and earrings like it was 199- yes, well – 9 and I was converted.

BUT, it’s with much restraint. Being a white white girl I don’t think you can pile on tons of gold jewelery like golden tan girls from the Mediterranean can.

You stole my brain.

Anything white I ever try to wear ends up covered in red wine. Which is interesting, because I don’t spill red wine on anything else.

I agree with everything you said except for the white. I can’t help it, I just love to wear white in the summer, not to meniton you can always bleach white. Although I would probably feel different if I had kids! I will admit a little secret, I’m not so sure my figure supports wearing white lately. I’m hoping to knock off a few pounds and maybe I will feel more confortable in white again. As for skinny jeans, you really must be skinny. Gold is definitley gaudy. And camo is for war.

Girl, you need to patent that…..”Hideous, yet practical!!” I love it!! I do not do white, or camo, and I MUCH prefer silver or white gold…but my husband always insists on yellow gold….so I do have alot of it…it just doesn’t go out much! Great Post!
