A room of my own

in decorating

The moving madness has started. The move is becoming more and more real, but rather than looming at the horizon, now it seems to open up a new one. I’m starting to feel that excitement, that thrill I feel when a new adventure awaits.

A move is always exciting, even if it’s a move back home. We don’t own a house in Switzerland, so a move means a new apartment. And the apartment we found is exactly what I wanted, in the area I wanted it in. I love that area of Zurich so much. The thought of going back to live there… wait, could it be? Could I actually be missing Switzerland?

Ok, yes, I do a bit. After all, it’s a beautiful country. It’s clean, well-organized and lovely to look at. As for the more unpleasant aspects, when the conservatism feels too much for me, I can always take a trip. Switzerland is nicely positioned, basically in the middle of Europe, from where you can easily drive to Germany, Italy, Austria and France. And London is only a couple of hours by plane.

Which got me thinking, once again, that when we finally settle down and decide to buy a house, Switzerland might be the right place to do it. I reserve to change my mind a few more times about this, and I know I will after the first month there, which will probably be a bit of an adjustment.

But for now, I just want to enjoy thinking of what kind of house I’d like. I know I wouldn’t want something too big, because considering my lack of proficiency for household duties, I would probably end up resenting it, rather than enjoying it. But I would want enough space for all of us of course, and a nice guestroom for our family and friends to stay in when they visit.

And I know for sure I would want a room just for me. I’d probably call it my office, but it would be more than that.

It would be my space, so it would be decorated to my taste, in colors I love.

It would be a place to relax and collect my thoughts, a place to go when I need space, so I would want something comfortable, even cozy, like a big squishy armchair, with a nice throw and a big lamp for when I want to read or study in peace.

I would also want a desk and comfortable chair, for when I want to write – and for when I want to to some research to figure out what to buy my husband for Christmas or for his birthday :-)

On my desk I would have all my favorite writing things: beautiful stationery, some nice pens, a gorgeous journal, maybe leather bound. And something pretty and decorative, like antique glass sugar bowls to store paperclips and rubberbands in.

I would hang my favorite art on the walls, probably something fantasy-related, by Amy Brown or Jessica Galbreth, something with faeries, maybe dragons – not just because I like them, but because any space where you read and write needs some magic, a whimsical touch.

I would like for the room to have a big window with a nice view, for when I need to feel inspired or I need something to put me in a good mood.

I would like a CD player in it, and my favorite CDs. And a bookshelf with my favorite books, of course.

Ideally I would also have some wine chilling somewhere, too – but I think that may be a stretch. Also because if I start adding wine or chocolate, this may be a room I end up living in ;-)

I love love love yours! Your room will be beautiful, and all the things you want to have in it sound perfect. I hope you get your room soon, and more than that, I hope you will take and share photos of it.

Your move sounds so exciting – I’ll have to read backwards to catch up on your plans – and I look forward to reading more. Off to add your link to my post now. So glad you did this!

Sounds like a great dream room to me! Mine would also involve lots of chocolate! ;) I can’t wait to see pictures of your move to Zurich. I have heard only wonderful things about living there, you know. People I know who love there go to Paris and Milan for the weekends! Is that not the most amazing thing, ever? Where are your parents – US or Italy?

I’m new here, but ooh, Switzerland =) I have a brother and sister who live there, just outside of Baden, so I can’t possibly pass up a post with the country mentioned without commenting. It’s a sickness.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that I totally agree. If I added chocolate or wine to a space that was already all mine? My husband would never see me again. Why mess with perfection? =) Good luck with (and enjoy) the move!

I have a room like that. They only problem? It doesn’t have a lock (swinging French doors).

So I can’t keep the kids out, if they really want in.

In my next life, I’m gonna live in a SAFE.

Oh, your move sounds like something out of a book…or maybe a movie. I’ve never been to Europe and still hope to get there one day. My sister has been there and absolutely loved it. I hope you post photos once you’re settled in.

And the whole ‘room of my own’ thing – I’m still working on that myself. I had one when we moved into our new house but it’s been completely invaded by my husband and kids. At this point, I’d be happy with a cozy little quiet corner with a big down- filled chair and ottoman.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today.

I am now officially old-ish….I turned 50 on my last birthday. And I finally got MY room…..the EXACT room you describe….minus the wine. Shhhhh…..don’t tell anyone…..I DO have Chocolate! And I adore my Office. People KNOW to leave me alone when I am in there. Just my bichons are allowed in there with me. It is heaven, my friend….and I really, really hope that you get YOUR room when you make your move. And I really hope that you’ll be continuing to blog??? Yes?? Cuz, I’d really miss your blog. We got the same kind of taste, girl!

I would love a room of my own. We bought our house like two years ago and we are still not really done. I don’t think you are ever really done decorating/updating! But I do have a shell of a space set up for me in a great spot in the basement. It has floor to ceiling bookshelves…but that’s about it! lol! I hope hubby fixes it soon. I want something that is all my own that I can make as girly as possible! I hope you get your room! It sounds like heaven!

The best thing about moving is re-organizing and re-dreaming everything and how you want it to be. Im remodeling right now and am constantly dreaming. Im loving it.

I have several cousins who live in Austria and I absolutely loved visiting with them. My parents were born in Europe (Hungary) and we visited both countries, several times, and had the pleasure of introducing my New England rooted husband to the old world ways of my ancestors. Haven’t been able to get back, once we started having kids. Hopefully, one day, the 6 of us will get the chance to return and I can introduce my clan to a large part of their heritage. In the meantime, can I move with you? Just asking. Good luck and keep us posted w/pics, please!

Your room sounds fabulous. A woman after my own heart – chocolate and wine – you can’t go wrong.
