United… oy vey (notes from a traveller)

Ok, here are a few comments I saved from our trip to San Francisco and back, where I found just how bad United Airlines is:

Notes from Day 1, trip to SF: hey, United Airlines? I understand we are in a recession and it’s economy class, but seriously, no food at all? On a 6 hour flight? Not even a miniature bag of peanuts or crackers? Seriously, pathetic.

Notes from Day 10, trip back to NY: Remembering the food fiasco on the way over, we thought “We’ll get some sandwiches and fruit at the airport.” Wrong! After spending 13 dollars on a plate of Chinese food and looking at fruit plates that costed 10 dollars, we decided we might as well eat on the plane. Which we did, the cobb salad was ok, but 9 dollars?? Pfffft.

Also, United, why did you rename your Economy class “Economy Plus”? Is this your idea of a joke? Because with 3 small TVs for the whole class, no food and older planes it seems to me that if anything it should be called “Economy Minus”.

Do you know that when you travel in Economy on Swiss or Luftansa (you partners in the “Star Alliance”, BTW) you have your own TV monitor and you get snacks and a meal (sometimes two, depending on the time) on every flight? If you are playing with the big boys, maybe you should try to measure up. I’m just sayin’.

Yes, I know this is bitchy. And no, I’m not sleeping on it. I did that already, and my feelings are the same as they were last week.

And to all, goodnight :-)

Whoa, ‘no food on a 6 hour flight – are you kidding me? Yup, sounds like a pathetic airline! We gets snacks on our 3 hour flights to Florida for crying out loud!

I can add to your list: They don’t pre-board for passengers with kids anymore. So, you have to wait in line with everyone else, lug all your stuff down the jetway, hold up the line, hit every seated passenger with your diaper bag and purse and baby’s legs, and try to quickly sit down with your little one. SO sucky. On my return flight the first class passengers insisted I board with them when we all realized that they weren’t going to let me pre-board.

How is not allowing pre-boarding a good thing for anyone??

I would end up eating my own foot if no one gave me food on a 6 hour flight!!!
That is why I love Qantas, Singapore Airlines, British Airways -you get quite tasty meals, proper inflight entertainment, extra snacks in between meals too (yes, I’m a hobbit, and I require my 2nd, 3rd, 4th lunches..)..e.g apples, nuts, brownies.. ice cream
I just flew with NWA from Amsterdam – Detroit, and I must add, they were really good too. Excellent entertainment system, and excellent wine and cheese list!! :-)
I can’t say I’m too impressed with SAS though. It’s not so much the airline that I’m unimpressed with.. it’s the passengers. Every time I board a scandinavian flight to Norway, 99.9% of the passengers are drunk. Even on a 7am flight. Not fun at all :-(
